Carbon Standards Compared: Verra, Gold Standard, GCC and Others

What a carbon standard actually does, how Verra VCS, Gold Standard and the Global Carbon Council differ in day-to-day practice, and what the standard on a listing should tell you.

The registry field on each of our listings also tells you which standard the project follows. Buyers often ask us which one is "best". The honest answer is that the standard sets the floor, not the ceiling. Two projects under the same programme can differ a great deal in quality, and the right choice depends on what you need the credits for. This page explains what a standard does and how the common ones feel different when you are actually reviewing a lot.

What a standard does

A carbon standard (also called a crediting programme) is the rulebook behind a credit. It decides:

  • Which methodologies are allowed. A methodology is the detailed recipe for measuring a project's baseline and its reductions or removals, for example how to estimate methane avoided at a landfill or carbon stored in growing trees.
  • Who checks the project. Standards accredit independent auditors, known as validation and verification bodies, and set the rules they work to.
  • How credits are issued. Only after verification does the programme create units in its registry.
  • What safeguards apply. Rules on community consultation, grievance processes, environmental harm and, for land projects, buffer contributions against reversal.
  • How problems are handled. Procedures for errors, over-issuance, complaints and project withdrawal.

So when you see a programme name on a listing, you are really seeing a promise that a known set of rules was followed and checked by an accredited third party.

The programmes you will meet most often

Verra (Verified Carbon Standard)

Verra's VCS is the largest voluntary programme by volume, and it covers the widest range of project types: forestry, renewable energy, cookstoves, waste, agriculture and industrial processes. Its scale means buyers will find plenty of liquidity and many methodologies. It also offers add-on labels, such as the Climate, Community & Biodiversity (CCB) standards and SD VISta, for projects that want to demonstrate wider benefits. The flip side of breadth is variety: a VCS listing needs to be judged on its own methodology and documents rather than on the logo.

Gold Standard

Gold Standard was set up by environmental NGOs and puts sustainable development at its centre. Projects must show contributions to UN Sustainable Development Goals beyond the climate goal, and stakeholder consultation requirements are detailed. It is especially common for cookstove, water purification, biogas and community renewable projects. Buyers who want strong evidence of social outcomes often start here. Our page on SDGs and co-benefits explains how those claims are evidenced.

Global Carbon Council

The Global Carbon Council (GCC) is a newer programme based in Qatar, set up to serve projects in the Middle East, Asia and Africa. It has a growing number of South Asian projects, including renewable energy and industrial efficiency activities. Its procedures resemble those of the older programmes, with its own registry and accredited verifiers. Indian sellers sometimes choose it for cost or regional familiarity.

Others

You may also see the American Carbon Registry or the Climate Action Reserve, which are mostly used for North American projects, and specialist programmes focused on engineered removals such as biochar or direct air capture. Older projects may still carry units from the UN's Clean Development Mechanism, which is being succeeded by a crediting mechanism under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement. India is also building its own domestic system, the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS), which is a separate track from the international voluntary programmes.

How they differ in practice

Question What to look at Why it varies
How conservative is the baseline? The methodology and version used Each programme maintains its own methodology list, and older versions may be less strict
How are reversals covered? Buffer pool rules in the project documents Contribution rates and replacement rules differ by programme and risk rating
How strong are social safeguards? Stakeholder consultation and grievance sections of the PDD Some programmes require more evidence than others
Is the unit usable for compliance? The programme's eligibility under the scheme you care about, plus authorisation Approval for CORSIA is granted per programme and per period, and can change
Can I check it easily? The public registry Search tools and document access vary in convenience

We deliberately do not publish a list of which programmes are approved for which purpose, because eligibility changes. For CORSIA, check the current ICAO decisions on icao.int or ask us to confirm in writing for the specific lot. Our CORSIA eligible units checklist walks through the full test.

A sensible way to use the standard field

  1. Filter first, judge second. Use the registry filter on the marketplace to narrow to programmes your organisation accepts, then compare lots inside that set.
  2. Read the methodology line. It tells you more about risk than the programme name does. A landfill gas methodology and a forest conservation methodology under the same programme carry very different questions.
  3. Match the programme to the claim. An airline needs a programme eligible for the relevant compliance period. A company buying for a voluntary goal has more freedom and may weigh co-benefits more heavily.
  4. Ask for the verification report. Every serious programme requires one, and it is the clearest view of what was actually checked. See project documents buyers receive.

If your procurement policy names particular programmes, include them when you post a requirement on our buyer intake form, and we will only propose lots that fit.
